How to Make Outlook Send Mail Right Away

Click “Send” Like You Mean It

“Oh… I did not realize you meant it!”

Of course, you did intend for Outlook to send the message when you clicked—Send in the message. (Unless, of course, you did intend to schedule the email for later delivery.)

If your Outlook keeps interpreting the Send button as “send at my earliest convenience (which, chances are, is not now)”, you can, fortunately, make it deliver mail you send immediately.

Make Outlook Send Mail Right Away

To set up Outlook to attempt to deliver emails you send as soon as you click Send:

  1. Click File in Outlook.
  2. Select Options on the sheet that has appeared.
  3. Go to the Advanced category.
  4. Make sure Send immediately when connected in checked under Send and receive.
  5. Click OK.

What Happens with “Send immediately when connected” Enabled?

If the ​Send immediately when connected option is enabled in Outlook and you click Send in an email, what happens depends on whether you are connected to a network and Outlook is set to working offline:

  • You are connected and Outlook is set to working online:
    • ​The message will be delivered immediately unless Outlook runs into an error.
    • If Outlook runs into an error, it will try delivery again periodically.
  • ​You are connected and Outlook is set to working offline:
    • ​Outlook will not deliver the email immediately irrespective of the ​Send immediately when connected option.
    • The message will be kept in the account’s Outbox folder until delivery.
    • Outlook will try to send the message while it is set to working offline if the account is part of a Send/Receive Group that is set to attempt mail delivery while working offline; it will follow the schedule there.
  • You are not connected and Outlook is set to working online:
    • ​Outlook will try to deliver the email but fail with an error.
    • The message will be kept in the account’s Outbox folder until delivery is attempted again.
    • Outlook will attempt to deliver the email a few minutes after you are connected again irrespective of other settings.
  • ​Youa re not connected and Outlook is set to working offline:
    • ​Outlook will not try to deliver the message immediately.
    • It will attempt delivery if the account is included in a Send/Receive Group that is set to sending mail while Outlook is set to working offline, however.
    • Even when you are online, Outlook will attempt delivery online depending solely on whether it is set to working offline.
    • When you set Outlook to working online and you are connected, it will attempt to delver the message after a few minutes.

Make Outlook Try Mail Delivery at Any Time

You can always

  1. press F9 or click Send/Receive All Folders

to have Outlook attempt to deliver any messages in Outbox folders (provided the accounts are included in a Send/Receive Group that is included in manual Send/Receive actions.

Make Outlook 2007 Send Mail Right Away

To make sure Outlook 2007 delivers mail immediately after you click Send (provided you are connected to a network):

  1. Select Tools | Options… from the menu in Outlook.
  2. Go to the Mail Setup tab.
  3. Make sure Send immediately when connected in checked.
  4. Click OK.
